Rabbit-Proof Fence
Doris Pilkington Garimara
Fourteen-year-old Molly and her cousins Daisy and Gracie were of mixed Aboriginal ancestry. In 14, Molly and her family were separated from their families and sent to an institution to receive an education as "white" Australians. There I was told to forget my mother, Aboriginal language, and home. Still, Molly didn't forget. Molly and her cousins fled the facility and continued walking north to their hometown of Jigalong, 1931,1600 kilometers away, over a rabbit fence in the desert. This escape is a true story told by Molly's daughter, Doris.
